The Tile Museum was founded in 1965 and is housed in the former convent of Nossa Senhora da Madre de Deus in Lisbon.
In 1980 it became the National Museum, and its main mission is to safeguard, conserve, study and publicise Portuguese tiles.
Its permanent exhibition is presented chronologically, covering the history of tiles in Portugal from the mid-15th century to the present day.
In addition to the collection, the convent space and the church of Madre de Deus, updated in Baroque style, show how the dialogue between tiles and gilded wood carvings is the origin of the expression ‘gold on blue’.
The museum has two rooms for temporary exhibitions and offers guided tours. A library, a shop and a restaurant complete the offer of an inclusive space, accessible to all audiences and a must-visit.
